Lab Countertop Material FAQ: Countertops, Sinks & Fixtures

This lab countertop material FAQ answers the questions lab managers, facilities teams, and procurement staff ask us most: which material fits which lab, how chemical resistance works, what sinks and fixtures we carry, and how custom sizing, free samples, and quotes work. For more than 20 years, Blackland Manufacturing has supplied laboratory work surfaces as a DURCON® authorized reseller.

Lab Countertop Material Questions

What lab countertop materials does Blackland offer?

We fabricate lab countertops in four materials: epoxy resin (including DURCON® epoxy), phenolic resin, stainless steel, and Trespa. Each is available in custom sizes with sink cutouts and specialized openings. You can compare all four in our laboratory countertops collection.

Which lab countertop material is best?

The best material depends on the chemicals, heat, and cleaning your lab uses. Epoxy resin offers the highest chemical resistance and heat tolerance in our line. Phenolic resin is lighter and resists moisture, impact, and scratches. Stainless steel is non-porous and simple to sanitize, with moderate chemical resistance. Trespa is highly resistant to a wide variety of aggressive chemicals.

Should I choose epoxy or phenolic resin?

Choose epoxy resin where harsh chemicals and heat are constant, such as research chemistry benches and sink runs. Choose phenolic resin countertops where lighter weight, impact resistance, and cost matter more and chemical exposure is moderate, such as many teaching labs and instrument rooms. Many facilities use both in different rooms.

How thick should a lab countertop be?

The right thickness depends on the material, the span between supports, and what sits on the bench. Heavy instruments and long unsupported runs call for more material than a light-duty prep area. See our countertop thickness guide by application, and we will confirm available thicknesses for your chosen material when we quote.

Chemical Resistance Questions

Are chemical resistant countertops resistant to every chemical?

No. Chemical resistance varies with the chemical, its concentration, temperature, and contact time. A surface that handles a quick splash of dilute acid may not tolerate the same acid left standing overnight. Cleaning agents count too: in many labs, daily disinfectants are harder on a bench top than the experiments are.

How do I use the chemical resistance chart?

List every reagent and cleaning agent your lab uses, with concentrations, and note whether contact is a splash or prolonged exposure. Then compare that list against our chemical resistance chart (PDF). If your lab uses a chemical the chart does not cover, send us the list and we will help you evaluate options.

Is stainless steel a good choice for chemical labs?

Stainless steel resists most stains and spills and handles moderate chemical exposure, but it is not our most chemical-resistant surface. It is strongest where sanitation matters most, such as biological work, clinical labs, and wash-down areas. Our stainless steel countertops are 16 gauge and run up to 16 feet without a seam and up to 48 inches wide.

Lab Sinks and Fixtures Questions

What lab sinks does Blackland carry?

We offer epoxy resin sinks in undermount and drop-in configurations, stainless steel sinks, and sink accessories. Epoxy sinks integrate with epoxy countertops and share their chemical and heat resistance. Browse sizes and configurations in our lab sinks collection.

Should I choose an undermount or drop-in lab sink?

An undermount sink mounts below the countertop, so spills and debris wipe straight into the bowl with no raised rim to clean around. A drop-in sink sets into a cutout from above and rests on its rim, which generally makes installation and later replacement simpler. The right choice depends on your countertop material, cleaning routine, and installation plan.

What other laboratory fixtures does Blackland supply?

Beyond countertops and sinks, we supply yellow flammable and blue acid and corrosive safety cabinets, balance tables built to minimize vibration for sensitive instruments, and pegboards and drying racks in acrylic, epoxy resin, phenolic resin, and stainless steel. Every pegboard includes free pegs and free replacement pegs for one full year.

Custom Sizing, Samples, and Quotes

Can you fabricate custom sizes and cutouts?

Yes. We custom-fabricate lab work surfaces to your exact dimensions, including sink cutouts, specialized openings, and integrated features. That includes tops made to fit existing casework, so you can replace surfaces without replacing the cabinets beneath them.

How do I get a free countertop sample?

Add a free countertop sample to your cart at no charge and choose your material: epoxy, phenolic, Trespa, or stainless steel. Epoxy and phenolic samples come in several color options. Handling a sample is the best way to judge surface finish and color before you specify.

What do I need to request a quote?

Start with whatever you have. We accept PDF specifications, architectural plans, or hand-drawn sketches with measurements. Include the material you prefer, sink locations, and any known chemical exposures. Submit through our request a quote page or call 1-800-906-8660.

Does Blackland ship nationwide?

Yes. We ship completed work to job sites in all 50 states using freight methods suited to large-format custom fabrication. See the industries we serve, from university research labs and K-12 classrooms to pharmaceutical, healthcare, forensic, and government facilities.
